The Parade Steps which consist of a 111 steps, and has the function of connecting Folkestone’s historic town centre to its harbour was professionally refurbished and re-opened in August 2016. Martello acted as the architect and contract administrator on this historical project.
The restoration work which took two months to complete, included refurbishing with traditional materials, reinstating some lost details – including the view of the Harbour from the landings – and repairing and re-levelling the stone steps.
The various improvements of the Parade Steps were made possible by part of The Heritage Lottery Fund’s grant of £1.3m to the Folkestone Townscape Heritage Initiative (FTHI). The FTHI consists of a partnership with Kent County Council (KCC), Shepway District Council (SDC) and the Creative Foundation. KCC has also added a contribution of £400,000 and SDC £100,000. Funding is being invested to help and restore the built historic environment of Character 4, the Heritage Quarter and the Old Town.
