Work experience is vital and more important than ever, especially in the rapidly expanding building industry, helping youth to discover the appropriate career path they want to explore or invest in for the future. Martello is delighted to have helped a local student from Folkestone Academy to gain valuable work experience during two of his holidays. William is now very keen to pursue a career in surveying. Please see below the news story published by the Folkestone Academy:
One major project that Martello Building Consultancy have been heavily involved in is the regeneration work of the Harbour Arm, as well as continued work on some of the large-scale pieces that form the eclectic and exciting Folkestone Triennial.
Andrew Cruttenden, Company Founder and Director, feels strongly about offering opportunities to young people in the Folkestone area and has personally mentored William during his second round of work experience. He comments: “With the current rate of regeneration works that are happening in Folkestone, I feel it’s important that young people are given the chance to participate and help shape their local geography.”
Back in February, William was immersed in the field of architectural design where he was given a brief to design his dream home. William began his sketches the old-fashioned way by putting pencil to paper and came up with a rough sketch. Later, William began to use specialist computer software to specifically map out each room and make the necessary adjustments to account for standard interior architecture features.
During the Easter holidays William returned to complete another 4 days of work experience where this time he was given a much bigger insight into the company’s practices. He was privileged enough to sit in on some of the project meetings with the Company Directors and was able to do his own area calculations on a development space which put his maths skills to good use! However, the highlight for Will, he said, was having his research on ceiling wood and wood care included in a presentation to Sir Roger De Haan.
Reflecting on his time at Martello; William comments: “This work experience has been invaluable, it’s me given confidence in the workplace as well as the courage to really get stuck in. Being able to see the diversity of projects and services undertaken by Martello Building Consultancy has confirmed this will be where my future career is heading. I am so grateful.”
