Project Description
Payer’s Park, Folkestone
Community Project
Martello Building Consultancy were appointed by Folkestone & Hythe District Council/Creative Folkestone to act as Employer’s Agent for this project in Payers Park, Folkestone. The project was to bring a dilapidated piece of land back into use in Folkestone Creative Quarter as a public park and art installation as part of the 2014 Folkestone Triennial.
The stunning design created by muf Architecture was created after consultation with local community groups, to deliver an open area which could be used by a variety of people, creating a new social space and to encourage passage through the area.
The steep topography of the site, in particular, brought a number of challenges to the delivery of the project and there were a number of influential stakeholders and project funders which added some complexity to the management of the project.
Payers Park now provides an open, fun space for the community with a play space including a fabulous slide, a lookout, an outside classroom and gym and with improved lighting and bin store. The area has also been used for a variety of outdoor functions as well as a performance space. For more information on the urban art installations in Folkestone that have been delivered as part of the Folkestone Triennial, please take a look at the Folkestone Artworks website and the Creative Folkestone website.
