Project Description

Bayle and Parade Steps

Community Project

Martello were commissioned by the Folkestone Townscape Heritage Initiative (FTHI) to produce a Schedule of Works for the refurbishment of two sets of historic steps in the historic heart of Folkestone Town Centre.

The Parade Steps leading from the Bayle down into Folkestone Harbour, and the Bayle steps linking the historic Old High Street to The Bayle were in need of significant refurbishment, new handrails and new lighting.

We drew up detailed specifications for the heritage works and produced a technical package of information for the tender process. Once the local authority – Folkestone & Hythe District Council had selected a contractor, we negotiated with them to ‘value engineer’ the works to be able to refurbish them whilst staying within the defined project budget.

The restoration work which took two months to complete, included refurbishing with traditional materials, reinstating some lost details – including the view of the Harbour from the landings – and repairing and re-levelling the stone steps.
